HOW TO “WALK WORTHY OF THE LORD
By Gary McDade
This gospel calling is expressed many times throughout the New Testament (*i.e.,* Ephesians 4:1; Colossians 1:10, and 1 Thessalonians 2:12). Five traits of the Christian’s worthy walk listed in **Colossians 1:10-14** will receive attention here.
PLEASE GOD, v. 10. “That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing.”
BE FRUITFUL IN EVERY GOOD WORK, v. 10. Jesus said, “So shall ye be My disciples” (John 15:8). Even as love is the mark of a disciple of Christ, so is bearing fruit by doing good works (John 13:34-35).
INCREASE IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD, v. 10. Reading the Bible, studying the Scriptures, and attending the assemblies of the church are excellent ways to accomplish this goal (1 Timothy 4:13; 2 Timothy 2:15; Hebrews 10:25).
STRENGTHENED WITH ALL MIGHT, v. 11. As mentioned in this verse is done “according to His glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness.” The qualities of patience, longsuffering, and joyfulness show spiritual strength.
GIVE THANKS UNTO THE FATHER, vv. 12-14. The reasons to do so revealed here are because a Christian is a partaker of the inheritance of God and has been delivered from the dark, destructive power of Satan, and he/she was translated into the kingdom or church of Christ. A Christian is redeemed—bought back out of sin by Christ—and forgiven of past sins.
“That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; Strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son: In whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins” Colossians 1:10-14.
